Hi grandpa, I was thinking about you last night. I still really miss you, and wish you were here to talk hunting with me. There are a lot of bucks up to camp this you, I shot a nice 8 point a few weeks ago, and hopefully will get another one over thanksgiving. I still can taste you venison stew and curry, no one made it like you, although I might be getting close :). My cooking ability is getting pretty good, I was on t.v. not to long ago cooking venison. I really wish I was talking to you right now, instead of typing, but I suppose talking to your spirit and talking to you on here will have to do for now...geeze, I just have to much to type on here. I love you grandpa

“This dying business is rather unpleasant”….one of the many lessons that I learned from my Father in life. Among this others, more pleasant, such as: how to bait a hook, to have good posture, to be quiet, to observe, to pay attention to details, to have good manners, to speak with proper grammar, to keep my mouth closed on a motorcycle, to be careful around propane torches & guns, how to clean and eat a lobster, where to look for salamanders, not to be afraid of spiders, the color eosin, to use a dictionary, how an engine works, what a pacemaker does, to try tasting everything at least once…

The most important lesson I learned though, Daddy didn’t teach me through lecture or discipline or demonstration, but in how he lived his own life. This lesson took my entire lifetime - and it took his dying - for me to truly learn.

Sometimes in life we fail to recognize that because we are not shining our light in everyone’s eyes, it does not make our light any less bright. That though we may not openly share all of our feelings and beliefs, it does not mean that we feel or believe any less fervently. We don’t have to be behind a pulpit, hoisted upon a pedestal, or standing in front of the crowd. We don’t have to have great achievements to achieve greatness. We have only to touch the lives of others’ and to experience great love.

Daddy was a great man, he was greatly loved, and he loved all of us greatly.

The world we live in is vastly complex, and we are each different. Some of us are called to do God’s works with much fanfare and noise, while others of us are called to do His works quietly and with honor.

~ What I have learned is that the one thing is no less great, than the other. ~

That was important lesson for me to get – it helped me to accept who it is that I am, and more importantly to know that that’s all I need to be – and knowing that has brought me both peace and joy to a time when I’ve needed it most.

There are many lessons I have learned in life, but the greatest of these I learned from my Father in death. It has been a year now since his passing, and I continue to miss him and to learn from him…..every day.

A year ago today, Daddy was still with us, still walking, still talking.

I miss him so.

But he would be glad to know that we have continued on, and that we are striving to have the best lives we can without him.
